I came to as Low, fingers wrapped around a bow that hummed like it was remembering something terrible. Alone was there, silent as always, wrench clutched tight, her eyes fixed on a dark that didn’t stay still. The world wasn’t dead—it was dreaming. Walls breathed, dolls twitched, and every corner seemed to whisper my name back to me. We didn’t need words; the silence between us said enough.
Each place carried its own kind of nightmare. In the Necropolis, the sand moved like it was alive, and the faces carved into stone watched us pass. The Candy Factory was worse—too sweet, too wet, the smell sticking to my skin until I couldn’t tell where I ended and the rot began. The funfair… that’s where the footsteps followed us. Heavy. Slow. Patient. The rain tried to drown the sound, but fear doesn’t wash off that easy.
It’s strange how a nightmare can feel like home when you’ve been in it long enough. I don’t know if Low and Alone will ever escape, but part of me hopes they don’t—because maybe the real world hurts worse than the dark.
