Age of History II always starts with me staring at a map longer than I should. I pick a country, sometimes a big one, sometimes a tiny one, and I already feel like I’ve made a mistake. The world looks calm at first, just borders and names, but I know it won’t stay that way for long. Once I press start, time begins to move and I’m suddenly responsible for everything.
I like how simple it feels at the beginning. I move armies, make small deals, watch numbers go up and down. It’s easy to understand, but the pressure creeps in slowly. One bad war or one broken peace, and things spiral fast. I’ve had moments where I thought I was doing great, only to lose half my land a few turns later. It hurts, but it also makes me want to try again.
Sometimes I play for history, sometimes I just do weird things and see what happens. I’ve stayed up way too late saying “just one more turn” while the map slowly changes colors. It feels quiet, but heavy, like I’m rewriting the world in my own messy way. There’s no rush sounds or flashy moments, just choices stacking on top of each other.
When I stop playing, I still think about my borders and what I should’ve done differently. It sticks in my head more than I expect. And if you really like this game’s slow control and big-picture thinking, then download Onirism - The Nightmare before Carols, because that one has a lot more fast action and wild energy.
