Ascension Gamebook dropped me straight into a dice-fueled dungeon crawl where my choices and luck decided everything. I played as a fresh acolyte from the Sky Guild, clutching my spellbook and stepping into a world already falling apart from ancient feuds and hidden magic.
It felt like a DnD session spun into a digital storybook from the start. Every choice, takes me deeper into strange cults where I have to solve deadly puzzles and also face creatures that didn’t care how fresh my robes were. With just two dice and a handful of stats—luck, stamina, and skill—I was at the mercy of every encounter. One bad roll and I was skewered, melted, or cursed into a tree. Seriously, the game doesn’t hold back.
The writing had this grim, self-aware tone. I’d read a page thinking I made the smart move, only to realize I’d triggered one of over 40 brutal (and also hilarious) deaths. It became a game within a game—trying to guess which page would end with a victory or a poetic demise.
What I loved most was how alive the choices felt. Some paths rewarded careful thinking. Others punished hesitation. It wasn’t about always making the “right” choice but about committing and seeing where the story took me. And trust me, sometimes that meant ending up in a pit full of spikes because I tried to pet something glowing.
