Kingdom Ascension caught me off guard. I thought I was stepping into a simple medieval base-builder—but I ended up knee-deep in tactical decisions, scrambling to hold the line with limited troops, sweating over whether to spend my last wood on barracks or a tech upgrade.
I started with nothing but a bare plot and a few peasants. Every resource mattered. Food, wood, stone—all of it needed to be carefully balanced. Should I rush my army to fend off an early raid, or invest in tech that might save me in the long run? Every decision felt like it could make or break my kingdom.
What really hooked me was the exploration. I’d send scouts beyond the fog, unsure if they’d find treasure or get wiped by a bandit ambush. Some ruins gave me artifacts that changed how I played. Others tested whether I was really ready to expand.
The battles aren’t hands-on, but that just made my planning feel more important. I had to think ahead—what troops to mix, what to upgrade, what terrain to push through. When a tactic worked and my small force broke through a stronger enemy, it felt earned.
It’s tough. Brutal, even. But in the best way and every run feels like it teaches you something new. Now I’m just hoping they add mod support, because I can already see the crazy custom maps and kingdoms people will dream up.
