Railroads & Catacombs throws you into a grim roguelike world where survival rides on the steel of your train and the strength of your custom-built deck. I started off thinking it’d be another card battler, but this one lets you create your own cards from scratch—something I haven’t seen done quite like this before. The movement pulls everything together for me—each step shines under lanterns that boost my speed in quick bursts.
The game’s core revolves around building deadly synergies. You choose from six combat styles and five crew classes, and every carriage on your train plays a role in whether you live or die. During combat, I found myself swapping between close-range finishers and long-distance spellwork, depending on the threats that emerged from the shadows. Bosses hit hard, and the game doesn’t hold your hand—so each victory feels earned.
That said, Railroads & Catacombs is still in early access, and yeah, the grind is real. You’ll run the same early areas more times than you’d like if you want long-term upgrades. But despite that, there’s already a great foundation here, and if you’re into deckbuilders, roguelikes, or gothic strategy, Railroads & Catacombs is worth jumping aboard. I’ll definitely be back to see how far the devs take it.
